C7 Whizz Kids

C7 Whizz Kids
All ready to start the day!

Welcome to C7's blog 2012

We welcome parents and extended family to our classroopm. We really appreciate any parent help. So far we have two lovely mums, Kylee and June who are giving up their precious time to help out with reading. Remember the more practice the children get, the more confident they become. Thank you to all you terrific parents who are supporting your children with homework. As a teacher I can see the growth with home reinforcement. Keep up the great work.

Greats and Grans Day

On Grandparents day we had lots of visitors. Grandparents, parents and babies all came to see us. We had lots of fun talking to them, looking at their photos and drawing pictures with them. We read the story of 'Grandma McGarvey Paints The Shed', then we made pastel pictures of her wearing her funky clothes. Luca and Aryssa took some of the photos of the grandparents. Luca also decided that we needed to farewell them with a haka. They loved it!! Grandparents day was awesome.

Our Irish Dance for the school production.

For the school production our class performed an Irish dance to the music of 'Toss the Feathers' by the Corrs. It was fast and lively. We had lots of fun performing on stage in front of our family and friends. They all supported us so well, they cheered and clapped, they were very loud and proud!! We made a mural about our dance. We added some collage figures of ourselves wearing our costumes. We hope you enjoy the slide show of photos that were taken on the morning and evening of our performance. A huge thank you to June and Kylee who assisted with fitting the costumes and helping the children get dressed. Also to Jacinda for sewing the sashes worn by the boys. You ladies are awesome!

Magnificent Magnolias

We hope you enjoy the spiralling slide show of our magnolia paintings. When Mrs Burnett brought the magnolias to school we looked carefully at them so we could capture the shape, colour and texture of the flowers and branches. We had to hold our paint brushes like a pencil and try to make feathery strokes with the brush. We also had to blend some of the colours for the petals and buds. The flowers were gigantic and the buds were wrapped in a furry case like a sleeping bag. We were very proud of our art work and we have had lots of lovely compliments. We also wrote some good descriptive stories which we published in the computer suite. Here are some of the stories to read together.

Our Spring Garden

Ataarangi's daffodil was the first spring bulb in our garden to open. It had a long narrow green stem. The petals were oval shaped. The flower was a bright sunshine yellow with a frilly trumpet in the centre. Ibanez- Rose was very excited to see her red tulip unfolding its cup shaped petals. When we looked inside the flower we could see the black stamens. They looked like a large bumble bee sitting in the middle of the flower. We also planted some vegetables in pots. We planted snow peas, lettuce, beans, tomatoes and beetroot. We hope they will grow well so that we can sample them before the end of the year.

In the garden outside our classroom we all planted some Spring bulbs and plants.  The bulbs were daffodils and tulips.  We had to dig a hole about 10 centimetres deep before we covered the bulbs with soil.  We put some ice-block sticks with our names on to mark the place where they are planted.  The flowering plants were pansies and polyanthus.  We hope they will all grow and make a colourful show.  We know the plants will need:
1. Water
2.Sunlight
3. Soil and fertilizer

Happy Healthy Harold

Harold

When we went for our last visit to the caravan, we all got the chance to meet Harold.  Bernie let us have our photo taken with him.  He was teasing us and making us laugh.  He pulled funny faces and he was being really silly.  Here is our description of Harold:  he had a jet black mane, a very long neck, two stubby horns, brown and yellow spotty skin, two soft oval ears, pink gums and no teeth, a big watermelon smile, bright sparkly eyes with long curly eyelashes.  Bernie told us that his tongue is so long, that he can clean his ears!!

This term we have been learning about weather systems.  We have looked at extreme conditions such as floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, droughts and tsunamis.  We have also explored the water cycle and found out how clouds are formed. Lots of us can identify different types of clouds and we can try to predict what type of weather they might bring.  Our favourite learning tool has been the 'Water Cycle Rap' which is both fun and full of information.  We have written some really good describe stories about floods and tornadoes.  We have been keeping a record of the daily weather patterns and this term we have have had mostly fine weather.
